list of the Bordeaux wine domains that have been bought by Chinese investors

A brief review of the situation:

The pace of Chinese acquisitions in the French vineyard of Bordeaux has been steadily increasing for a few months. The current speed is about one “château” per month, a buying frenzy that has a contrasted reception in the region. If some are worried to see important assets being controlled by foreign investors, many people are quite happy with the Chinese investors’ sudden interest in wine.

They tend to boost the market and inject new blood in the speciality, and the trend seems to be growing. China has become the world’s 5th wine consumer and wine importers are now everywhere in China, even in remote areas that were totally disconnected from the wine market only a few months ago.

Chinese billionaires and large corporate groups want to invest in Bordeaux, for various reasons. Some of them want prestige, a possibility to have a foot in the west or are genuinely planning to do business. For the moment, most of the domains that have been bought are rather small and not too well know, with some notable exceptions. According to some people, the Chinese investors are beginning with small domains in order to understand the region and the activity, but they are planning big.

The importance of the trend shouldn’t be exaggerated. Currently, according to published data, 45  châteaus in the Bordeaux region have been bought by Chinese investors, this is very marginal. Still, this might be a great opportunity for this region to bounce back in the world market, with new dynamism and new optimism. These are as well wines you are likely to find on the Chinese market. This is a story to be continued…

    Interesting article.
The wave of chinese investment in Bordeaux has been increasing for the past few years definitely.
However, due to this situation of chinese investment in the region, you can find some owners trying to cash out while it is still possible, selling their vineyards to chinese investors and often, way above market price.

For instance, Chateau La Gorce owner is trying to sell his property to a chinese buyers for a hefty price tag of 9M€ !…his property actually is valued in the market for about 2.5€M but he is convinced that chinese buyers will fork out that amount for the chateau : http://www.chateaulagorce.org

In fact, this owner is not the only one that I met who is thinking that chinese buyers are all crazy about Bordeaux and will pay so much a property that is not worth the price.
